Chennai, previously known as Madras is the fourth largest city in India and is the capital of Tamil Nadu. Famous as the Gateway to South India, Chennai is a key port and business center. Though it’s a busy, commercial city, Chennai is still traditional in many ways and people of Chennai follow time-honored cultural practices even today. It’s interesting to take a walk around the crowded streets of Mylapore and watch the colorful festivities and temple events. The origins of Madras started in 1639 when the British East India Company obtained permission to start trading. The Fort St. George was built to serve as headquarters. Under British rule, Madras flourished to become a business capital. The best time to visit Chennai would be between September and March. Important places to visit include Fort St George, St Thomas Basilica, Kapaleeshwarar temple and Marina Beach. You could also take an excursion from Chennai to visit Mahabalipuram, a place of historic importance with many beautiful monuments. Don’t miss shopping at the pavement stalls of Pondy Bazaar and Parry’s Corner. Chennai’s a fusion of modern and cultural attractions that make it an interesting place to visit.
