Changde, China, travel information

Changde is a city populated by 6,000,000 residents. It is located on the north bank of the Yuan River in northern Hunan Province in China and is encircled by mountains and plains. Due to this topography, the city is now the administrative, storage and shipping point for tung oil, grain, cotton, medicinal herbs, and wood.

The history of the city involves good and bad times. During the earlier part, it was the center of the government’s control over mountain tribes. Then it became a prosperous commercial and agricultural center during the Qing Dynasty, but suffered a horrifying blow when the Japanese employed chemical and biological weapons on its city area during the Battle of Changde.

This inland city is famous for its Old Stone and New Stone Age sites. There are also more than 200 preserved historic sites within its boundaries.
