Castres, France, travel information

Castres is a town located within Languedoc in France. It is known for being the birthplace of the renowned socialist leader Jean Juares and home to the Goya Museum of Spanish Painting.

The history of the once medieval town of Castres revolved within the struggles of Catholicism and Protestantism, the French Revolution, and the industrial revolution. It had its glorious time before the industrial revolution came and had once been the largest city in the area. During the industrial revolution and until present, the city suffered a serious economic meltdown because of its traditional and polluting industries.

Despite the decline in its industries, Castres is still a magnet for many tourists. The Goya Museum, the church of Saint Benoit, Romanesque Tower, and the Jardin botanique Pierre Fabreare are among the monuments to see in the town along with its old mansions built during the renaissance period.
