Cartagena is the capital city of the Bolivar Department and is located on the Northern Coast of Colombia. It is a center of economic activity in the Caribbean Region and a popular tourist destination.

The city has a splendid history. It hosts the first documented community in today’s Colombia and several cultural tribes before it was colonized by Spain. Cartagena was also a favorite place for pirate attacks, the most famous of which was led by Francis Drake.

Today, modern infrastructure and ancient forts and fortresses are among the many attractions that lure people into the city. Its fortress, ports and group of monuments have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and have played host to many local and international films. Other attractions include Islas del Rosario, Cartagena Gold Museum, Palace of the inquisition, India Catalina, and its public and private libraries.
