Carcassonne, France, travel information

Carcassonne is a fortified town in the former province of Languedoc in France. It was the Romans who fortified the area and by 1659 when the Treaty of Pyrenees transferred the border of Rossellini to France, the military significance of the town was reduced. Fortifications were abandoned and the town became an economic center concentrating on the woolen textile industry.

In the present days, majority of the town’s income come from tourism. This is mainly credited to its fortified town, which was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The textile industries along with wine making are also famous economic ventures. Tourists can also visit other attractions like the Pont Marengo and its recreational lake called Lac de la Cavayere.

The town experiences cool summers and mild winters, which makes it perfect for tourist to visit its fortress and drink its wine all year round.
