Campeche is the capital city of the Mexican state of Campeche. It was founded as San Francisco de Campeche by Spanish conquistadores in 1540 and was the second largest and most important city in the Yucatan Peninsula until the end of the 20th century.

A notable feature of the city is its walls. This was built around 1686 to unify all the defensive works that surround the city. After it was completed, it had a length of 2,560 meters and had eight strongholds on each corner. There were also 2 forts that were built before the wall and were used as lookouts.

At present, the strongholds and forts are being used as museums, libraries, prison, and botanical garden. Due to the presence of these historical infrastructures, the whole fortified city has been awarded as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
