Akure was formerly known as "Àkún rę" (meaning Beads Broken) and the etymology came from a folklore that says, the city was said to have been founded by the descendant children of Oduduwa, the ancestor of the Yoruba tribe. The Prince left Ile-Ife looking for a place to settle in, like any other Yoruba city, who was said to also have been founded by Princes. The Prince, with heavy royal breads on his neck, was running off, and the beads were broken, thus assuming the place may be where Olorun (God) wanted him to settle, thus we get "Àkún rę", later on it was changed to Akure.
Akure is a very agricultural area, that explains why they are considered to be a trade center for farming,. Some of their agricultural treasures, include yams, cocoa, corn, cassava, tobacco and cotton, which is used to weave clothes.
