Aitutaki, Cook Islands, travel information

With a population of approximately two thousand, Aitutaki is one of the Cook Islands in Rarotonga’s north. Aitutaki is the second most frequented of all the Cook Islands next to the capital Arutanga on the west side. Well known for its turquoise lagoon in its centre as well as palm-fringed beaches and uninhabited islands, Aitutaki has an advantage of being spared massive tourism and is a tranquil escape from the hubbub of modern living. An old church which is the oldest in the Cook Islands and some giant Banyan trees line the locality.

The most important attraction is the Tapuaetai which is also known as One Foot Island as is a small islet on the lagoon’s south east corner. Aitutaki’s mainstay is tourism although the number of visitors to its beaches currently not very high. This is due to the fact that there are no direct international flights. A wide range of budget or luxury resorts are available in the area.
