The capital city of the Khuzestan province in Iran, Ahwaz was built on the Karun Riverbanks and is situated right in the center of the Khuzestan Province. Ahwaz used to be the junction for many ancient routes and is built on the ruins of an old city. With a population of 1,338,126 in 2006, Ahwaz is quite known for its universities as well as its role in industry and commerce. Some of its universities are the Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Science, Petroleum University of Technology, Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz and the Islamic Azad University of Ahvaz.
Near the twentieth century, oil was found near the city and as a result of this sudden wealth, the city prospered and grew into the bustling industrial city it is today. The Ahwaz Bridge is quite a sight to behold especially at night when its lights reflect on the Karun River. The Rumi statue is located in front of the faculty of letters and humanities at the Shahid Chamran University of Ahwaz.
