Abidjan, Ivory Coast, travel information

Abidjan is the largest city and the economic capital of the Ivory Coast. It is the third highest population of French speaking residents in the world. It is Africa’s cultural hub and is highly urbanized and industrialized. The city is located in Ebrie Lagoon on a group of converging islands and peninsulas which are connected by bridges. The 1951 completion of its Vridi Canal made it possible for the city to be a significant port. The city had thus become the capital of the Ivory Coast until 1983 when it was replaced by Yamoussoukro. However, most embassies and government offices are in Abidjan to this day.

Le Plateau is the centre for business in Abidjan. Towering skyscrapers, stylish boutiques and outdoor cafes with international standards make this a favorite location for business and leisure travelers. Many banks are in le Plateau as well as the St Paul Cathedral which was designed by architect Aldo Spiritom. Other attractions include the Cocody Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art and the Parc du Banco rainforest reserve.
