Abadan, Iran, travel information
Situated in southwestern Iran, Abadan is part of the region which produces oil. It sits on an island of the same name on the east bank of the Shatt Al-‘Arab river approximately fifty-three kilometers from the Persian Gulf, making it the city right on the border before Iraq.
City officials are currently planning a museum of oil to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the oil refining industry in Abadan. In both 1965 and 1971 until 1973, the Abadan oil refinery was featured on Iran’s 100-rial banknotes.
Abadan is also known for producing more than the usual Iranian national soccer team players. The local team Sanat Naft Abadan which means Oil Company of Abadan is called the Brazil of Iran since they share the same team colors as the Brazilian team and train in the same techniques. Abadan is a popular tourist destination due to the concerts of the Iranian singers of Abadan. Abadani have their unique musical genre called Bandary which has made this place quite the tourist attraction.
