Aasiaat Kommuniat, Greenland, travel information

Greenland’s fourth largest town in the Qaasuitsup municipality, Aasiaat is located in South Disko Bay in the midst of a small archipelago of islands. Referred to, at times, as the ‘town of the whales,’ Aasiaat has an array of marine mammals such as seals and whales as well as watersports like kayaking and boat adventures. It is also sometimes called ‘the land of a thousand islands’ due to the beauty of the archipelago it is in. Founded in the mid-eighteenth century, the town was founded by Hans Egede in 1759 and has currently developed into a quaint little town with museums featuring world-renowned Danish painter Per Kirkeby, Inuit history as well as relics of the town’s past.

Winter months offer tourists cross-country skiing, dogsled and snowmobile tours. Summer months offer a midnight sun which let you whale-watch to your heart’s content or go kayaking with a guide at the skerries which offer calm water, ever changing picturesque views and calm shores for you to rest in.
