Based in Berlin-Tegel in Germany, Air Berlin is Germany's second largest airline and the third largest low-fare carrier in Europe carrying 13.5 million passengers in 2005.
In February 2006 Air Berlin won the Low Cost Airline Service Excellence Award" following a international survey of 3000 business travellers conducted by Skytrax and named #1 in customer service by German business magazine Capital.
Air Berlin has over 2,650 employees. In February 2006 the fleet consisted of 54 aircraft, and with an average age of less than four years.
Air Berlin announced its plans go go public in 2006. Since early 2004 Air Berlin has held a 24 per cent stake in NIKI, the Austrian low-fare airline founded by Niki Lauda.
